In managed care, the lifespan record for a tiny 1 pound, cotton-top tamarin is an astonishing 24 years. But what about in the wild, where life unfolds in a dynamic tropical forest? Thanks to nearly three decades of long-term research, Proyecto Tití is beginning to answer that question—one remarkable tamarin at a time.

In Colombia’s Montes de María region, farmers are transforming their lands into living wildlife corridors and open-air laboratories—working alongside conservation partners to monitor forest regeneration, document the return of primates, birds, and wild cats, and lead a powerful community-driven effort to reconnect and restore the tropical dry forest.

Celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we’re proud to spotlight Claribeth and the remarkable women of Proyecto Tití who are leading conservation efforts in Colombia’s tropical dry forest. Through science, dedication, and careful observation, they play a vital role in protecting the critically endangered cotton-top tamarin and its forest home.

This year, I had the joy of welcoming a group of my long-time friends from Wisconsin and beyond to Colombia for an unforgettable visit to Proyecto Tití. Together, we journeyed into the heart of cotton-top tamarin country, where they experienced firsthand the conservation work and community partnerships that have shaped Proyecto Tití for so many years.
