Eco-Mochilas: Helping to Protect Habitat for Cotton-top Tamarins
Proyecto Tití has sponsored the development of eco-mochilas. Mochilas are traditional bags made in Colombia. We have re-designed them so they can be made from plastic, in turn reducing the amount of plastic bags found littered in the forests and villages of Colombia. Managing waste in small villages is a challenge. There are no formal means to manage waste, so most trash is thrown to the roadside or designated areas for burning. We were experiencing a challenge with the amount of plastic that was found in tropical forest homes of the cotton-top tamarins. So we began a program that helped to turn plastic bags, that were littering the environment and jeopardizing the health of the cotton-tops, into something that would generate a direct economic benefit to communities leaving near forested areas that contained cotton-tops. That’s how eco-mochilas were born … take that trash and turn in something that makes a differences in the lives of people and tamarins! The Women of Los Limites
How can I help the Cotton-top Tamarins? By purchasing eco-mochilas you are helping the community of Los Limites generate income that helps support their families while reducing their dependency on forest resources.
By purchasing mochilas you are helping the community of Los Limites generate income that helps support their families while reducing their dependency on forest resources. The ASOARTESANAS and the people of Colombia are inspirational ambassadors for conservation. They go door to door to collect plastic bags and talk about the need to conserve cotton-top tamarins and their habitat in the neighboring villages. This interest and dedication to conservation of this endangered species has inspired other communities to get involved! I WOULD LIKE TO PURCHASE A MOCHILA! Please visit our Eco-Mochila page to purchase your mochila today. |
